casual bystander

the letter arrived
in an unmarked envelope
with a polite invitation
to swim in several rivers

the ceremony was delayed
because I couldn’t find a tie
I had no idea who ‘they’ were
and the radio was no help

I stopped to pick fruit
(mostly rotten) out of a dustbin
just to have something to throw
when the time came
